Most flowering plants are best to start with the first spring frosts in the area of your farm or garden before winter. Saffron plants are very active in sunlight. Even under a frosty frost, some plants need some sunlight during the winter (not too much because in cold climates some saffron plants need more than 30 hours of daylight).
Another important thing to remember is that you should not plant saffron in your vegetable garden in late afternoon before the first frost. If you do not want to have a frost and do not have a very wide vegetable garden, saffron can be grown in late afternoon for an hour or more.
I always prefer to plant saffron between 5 or 6 in the afternoon, but in my garden I sometimes do not feel the first frost until late afternoon. You may also plant it after midnight.
A lot of people want to start their saffron plants after the first frost in the spring. This is a good time to plant in the following season.
I hope this has helped and I am eager for your input and questions.

A day after her new documentary, “Waste Land: Chicago’s Hidden Wealth and Our Response,” went viral, activist and author Alice Walker, best known for her essay collection, “The Color Purple,” returns to Chicago, where she’ll unveil a new exhibit to mark the launch of the film.
Walker will be holding the public screening of “Waste Land” for free from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 6 at the Mabel M. Hauser Museum of African and Asian Art, located at 50 S. Mayfield, 847 N. Lincoln Ave. The event is free with RSVP at the museum’s website.
“Waste Land” follows Walker as she travels the country to reveal what she believes is a vast global theft: waste that’s created in factories, homes and farms. She will provide insight and perspective for the exhibit, “Beyond the Green Zone,” which follows her as she travels through 10 cities and five continents to learn about the lives of impoverished communities in the Midwest.
Walker will share her personal stories of living and working in the area, as well as her activism in the fight for green infrastructure, such as
