Do you need a college degree to be a filmmaker? – New York Film Academy Documentary Filmmaking Redux Diet

Not exactly.

“A film-school instructor said, ‘I don’t think so. You’re not in the industry in that way,'” says Lee. “You can take a class at an art school, or a computer school. There are a lot of people in the industry with a degree in an information-technology field that will work for you. I have seen that in the digital arts. If I was a student that were to apply, I might find out how to work in the digital arts even though I haven’t worked in that field.”

The industry has grown dramatically since the late 90s and the early 2000s. But it’s a very different business today, and not just in terms of the number of people working in the industry. What they’re seeing now is an emerging industry of filmmakers, producers and actors that uses the internet just like any other.

Even the term “screenwriter” is now taken quite seriously. “Screenwriters are people who write for other people,” says Lee. “Just like musicians, we write.”

To me, what looks like an emerging industry in other business is something to be embraced. Even in the film industry, there is still a very real need for better, more streamlined distribution models. The way the internet works is not unlike the way TV works. It’s not about the individual networks and platforms but rather a system for distributing the medium. I’d love to see more studios use that model.

As I’ve learned more about film and the digital world, I’ve found that filmmakers and filmmakers have more in common than I ever thought they would. When I asked Lee about the difference between traditional Hollywood and the new digital world, one of the things he said was what was amazing to me is how in-depth both of those are.

So far, I’ve seen the digital world being a huge help to people, especially the new generation of filmmakers who come into the industry who grew up in the 70s and 80s. There’s a huge desire on my end, not just to get into the business, but to make something with the kind of visual quality that we know today — in terms of tone, with sound, with the sound effects.

If you go back to the movies that have been released in the past 35 years, they’re not all bad. It all depends on how you are looking at it. In the past 25 years, it’s been the movies that have been made on the top 10 or 20 feature
