Belly dancing was originally taught by Native American tribes as an exercise to help women strengthen their pelvic floor muscles, which help stabilize pelvic organs and reduce the pressure they can experience during childbirth.
Belly dancing today includes a wide variety of moves for women ranging from the back belly-dancer to belly dancing with one leg, hip hop belly dance, belly dancing with the entire body, and other moves involving a variety of body parts.

“Belly dancing is one of the best ways to promote good posture, improve bowel function, and increase overall overall muscle conditioning at the same time,” says Liza DellaPiazza, clinical coordinator at the Center for Healthy Weight at NYU Langone Medical Center.
“Belly dancing encourages women to focus on their bodies, to work from the belly muscle and make their bodies healthier for years to come,” she adds.
A review published in 2010 in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery looked at the scientific evidence on the effects of belly dancing on the gut.
Researchers examined studies that randomly assigned women back to back and looked for an association between dancing and improvements in the gut biomechanics and gut function.
Researchers found that back belly dancing improves the body awareness and positioning, which helps reduce post-exercise bloating. Additionally, researchers found lower-risk gut microbiota in women receiving back belly dancing compared with women who didn’t receive belly dancing.
